AP Art History visits Maitland Art Center
AP Art History students explored the Maitland Art Center this past Saturday, for an immersive study of The Indigenous Americas. Students analyzed the architecture of MAC founder Andre Smith, who was inspired by Mayan culture. They made comparisons between the site and the studied architecture of Templo Mayor, Machu Picchu and the Pueblo Villages of Mesa Verde, identifying sacred spaces vs. functional spaces. For activities, they created relief rubbings of the carved walls and experimented with repousse (foil tooling). Artist studios were open and students connected their studies of indigenous wearable and functional art through visits with a textile artist. They also toured the studio of a modern painter influenced by Post-Impressionist, Paul Cézanne.
